We would like to invite you to another meeting of the Philosophy Club.

Time/Date: Friday, October 6th, at 11am.

Location: Rich Building, Rm 232 (small conference room adjacent to the SPP Main Office)

We will discuss the attached paper by Michael Hoffmann: Learning to Engage with Wicked Problems in Teams

As always, it is expected that you read the paper before the meeting.

Abstract: Complex, societal problems can be overwhelming. Maybe better avoid them. This contribution shows how a cloud-based learning technology—the Reflect! platform—can be used to practice a particular strategy for dealing with so-called wicked problems. By providing a learning experience that is close to collaborative problem-solving in real life, students can gain the self-confidence needed to engage constructively with wicked problems. The approach presented is an example of how philosophy can contribute to general education. After distinguishing four learning goals that are supported by the Reflect! platform—learning to reflect, to engage in consensus-oriented deliberation, collaborative problem solving, and learning to grapple with wicked problems—and a deeper analysis of the challenges posed by wicked problems, the paper provides the results of a survey-based assessment of the Reflect! learning experience.
