Emotion AI is an emergent area of technologies that (claim to) detect human emotions based on video, audio, and other data about human bodies and behaviors (biodata). Howell's design research investigates situated, nuanced ethical issues of emotional interpretation with biodata. This identifies issues and offers design tactics working toward algorithmic engagements with emotion that maintain fairness and inclusivity across human differences and the irreducible complexity of human experiences. Howell designs, builds, and studies tangible biodata displays using heat, sound, clothing, and furniture. Howell's dissertation came out of the BioSENSE lab at UC Berkeley. Howell's work is published in top tier international HCI venues including CHI, DIS, and CSCW.
