The School of Public Policy with The Law, Science and Technology Program are honored to welcome Polly J. Price as a speaker for the upcoming Meg and Sam Flax Lecture Series on Public Policy for a talk titled “Governing Disease Amidst Plagues in the Nation.”
Price will discuss themes from her new book, Plagues in the Nation: How Epidemics Shaped America (Beacon Press 2022). Throughout U.S. history, law and government affected the outcome of epidemics and major outbreaks of contagious disease — and those outbreaks in turn shaped our government. Price presents a fascinating history that has never been fully explored, and she draws important conclusions about gaps in our governmental and legal response faced by elected officials for generations. A Kirkus starred review calls Price’s book “an authoritative history of America’s flawed responses to epidemics,” and Publisher’s Weekly terms Plagues in the Nation “as essential study of what needs to change before the next epidemic.” A book signing will follow Price’s lecture, and food will be provided.`
About the Speaker: Polly J. Price is the Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Law and a professor of global health in the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. A public health law scholar as well as a legal historian and citizenship and immigration law expert, she has published, lectured, and taught widely about immigration and citizenship, public health law and regulatory policy, federalism, property rights, and the judiciary. In 2017, Price was named an Andrew Carnegie Fellow, a distinction awarded to a small group of scholars, journalists, and authors whose work addresses the most pressing issues of our day and serves to strengthen U.S. democracy. Price’s scholarship has been recognized most recently with the 2019 Hughes-Gossett Award from the U.S. Supreme Court Historical Society, and in 2016, she was invited to deliver the Leon Silverman Lecture at the U.S. Supreme Court.
