Superhero Movies and the State: Understanding the “Marvel”ous Government-Entertainment Complex

Tricia Jenkins, professor of film, television, and digital media at Texas Christian University, will be giving a lecture as part of the Sam Flax Lecture Series on Public Policy.

This talk will explore the movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to illustrate how Hollywood works with various government agencies to affect public policy and influence public opinion. Movies will include The Avengers, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Iron Man and others, while the government agencies addressed will include the Department of Defense, the Science and Entertainment Exchange, the Central Intelligence Agency and NASA. Attendees will learn just how deep U.S. government influence in the world’s most popular entertainment franchise runs and how those franchises, in turn, help the U.S. government achieve a myriad of its own agendas.
