Andrew McGraw

1. What do you do?

I am currently the academic program manager for the Ivan Allen College Dean’s Office. In this role, I oversee the academic success, engagement, and retention of Ivan Allen students from orientation until graduation. This includes managing scholarship and award programs, planning student-focused events, analyzing enrollment data, and advising our student advisory boards.

2. What’s the coolest part of your job?

The coolest part of this job is simply the diversity of my responsibilities. Some days are spent entirely behind the computer, while others are spent completely away from the office. Every week is something new, giving me constant opportunities to develop my skills and meet new people.

3. Why are you passionate about it?

College is one of those life experiences that truly is what you make it but is highly dependent on the opportunities available to you. I’m passionate about increasing access to learning and development opportunities for students from all backgrounds and identities to have the best experience possible at Georgia Tech and Ivan Allen College!

4. Which skills from Georgia Tech and your IAC degree have helped you be successful in this career?

Georgia Tech (and the Ivan Allen College specifically) teaches us to always look for ways to improve and innovate — something that’s integral to the ever-changing field of higher education. This adaptability, paired with the critical thinking and communication skills provided by the College and the School of Public Policy, has made it much easier to be successful and helped me stand out against other candidates.

5. What’s your #1 tip for students and alumni interested in your field?

With higher ed, there’s a job for everything, from administration and advocacy to teaching and marketing — the opportunities are limitless! Look for a job opening that aligns with your current skills and passions, then go from there. If you’re still a student, I’d also recommend finding ways to get involved behind the scenes; try joining advisory boards and search committees or even getting a part-time job or internship on campus.
