Biography:

Maria Sotnikova’s study of public policy began while she was pursuing an engineering degree at Georgia Tech. A keen interest in sustainability led her to take an environmental policy course taught by Dr. Bryan Norton and the rest is history. Upon graduating with honors in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering, Maria immediately enrolled in Georgia Tech’s dual master’s degree program between the School of Public Policy and School of City & Regional Planning. Three years later, she graduated with a Master of Science in Public Policy with a concentration in Environmental & Energy Policy, as well as a Master of City & Regional Planning degree, in May 2014.

A Jack-of-all-trades, Maria is now a Certified Planner (AICP) who works as a Data Scientist at the Atlanta Regional Commission. At work, she spends her time helping make complex urban issues easier to understand (a skill first picked up while studying Public Policy) by creating data visualizations such as maps, dashboards, and infographics. Outside the office, Maria enjoys long walks on the BeltLine, taking in live music and public art, and advocating for inclusive and accessible communities.
