Which Program is Right for Me?
We offer three distinct academic options for students interested in the intersection of law, policy, and technology. Whether you’re considering law school, planning a career in tech and innovation, or simply curious about legal systems, the LST Minor, Pre-Law Certificate, and Intellectual Property Certificate each offer a unique path to explore these interests through interdisciplinary coursework.
LST Minor
Explore the intersection of law, science, and public policy through interdisciplinary electives from across campus.
- Core (Choose One): PUBP 3000, 3016, 3610, or 4609
- Electives (Choose Four): Up to one course at the 2000 level; remaining credits must be at the 3000+ level
- Letter grade of C or better required
- Up to 9 credit hours Special Topics and 4 credit hours Special Problems allowed
- Max 3 credit hours transfer credit if approved
- No double counting with other minors or certificates
- Courses counted towards the minor may not be required by name/number for the student's major
Pre-Law Certificate
Build a strong foundation for law school through courses in legal systems, public policy, and critical thinking.
- Core (Choose One): PUBP 3000, 3016, 3610, or 4609
- Electives (Choose Three): Must all be 3000+ level
- Letter grade C or better required
- Up to 9 credit hours Special Topics and 4 credit hours Special Problems allowed
- All courses must be taken in residence
- No double counting with other minors or certificates
- Courses counted towards the certificate may not be required by name/number for the student's major
Intellectual Property Certificate
Prepare for careers at the crossroads of innovation and law with specialized coursework in intellectual property and technology policy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I complete both the Minor and the Pre-Law Certificate?
No. Due to overlap in course requirements, students may only earn one: either the Minor or the Pre‑Law Certificate—not both. However, students may complete the Minor and the IP Certificate or both Certificates provided there is no double counting of courses.
Will the Pre-Law or IP Certificate appear on my transcript?
Only the LST Minor appears on your Georgia Tech transcript. Certificates are awarded by the program and can be listed on resumes or applications but are not part of your official academic record.
Can I count the same course toward another Minor or Certificate?
No. Georgia Tech prohibits “double-counting” the same course toward more than one credential (Minor or Certificate).
How do I know if a course counts as an elective?
Approved courses are listed on the courses section. For special topics courses or unlisted options, email Andy McNeil to request approval.
